Justin Beiber aka Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber to Change Spelling of Surname

April 1, 2010

Canadian teen pop star and heart-throb Justin Bieber is changing his name.  Or at least, he is correcting the spelling of his last name.

The manager of pop star Justin Bieber has confirmed to gruvr.com that the young star will file papers to change his last name to “Beiber” once he returns to Ontario next week.

Bieber, 16,  is the youngest solo male artist to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since Aug. 24, 1963, when the then-13-year old Stevie Wonder spent one week at No. 1 with “Little Stevie Wonder/The 12 Year Old Genius.

Justin’s last name is pronounced “Beeber”, not “Buyber”, yet its correct spelling, given its pronunciation, has been a source of constant confusion and errors. According to manager Scott Brown, questions over how to spell the name are costing the enterprise time and money in having to correct and clarify the spelling for press, promotional literature – and especially for fans.  ”Now that Justin has reached the top, it’s time for us to move quickly to correct this before things get any worse”, said Brown.

Bieber, 16, whose hits include One Time and Baby, recently signed autographs at a clothing stall at Roosevelt Field Mall in a New York suburb.  One fan waiting for an autograph commented that Bieber didn’t know how to correctly pronounce his own name, and a scuffle broke out in the line among devoted fans, who were offended by any criticism of their idol. Nassau County district attorney Kathleen Rice said in a statement the event had quickly become overcrowded, putting fans in danger of being “trampled”.

Further compounding the comedy of error is recent coverage by major news organizations like the BBC, who spelled it “Beiber” in their latest news release .

According to Brown, the problem is not a new one for Justin. “Justin has been frustrated with the spelling of his last name since he could write, and his friends began pronouncing his name wrong.

Tour Tickets

The change is expected to be complete by June 1, before Justin’s extensive summer tour begins on June 23 in Hartford, CT .  This is important so that the many tickets to be printed can use the correct spelling.  One side effect of this change could be that already-issued tickets, using the old spelling, will become instant collectors’ items.

Twitter to change

A second practical issue is Justin’s twitter account, at http://twitter.com/justinbieber – which has 1.6 million followers.   Bieber management is hoping to work with twitter directly to get the spelling changed, without requiring all fans to unfollow @justinbieber, then follow @justinbeiber.

One issue which won’t be resolved by this change, however, is the long-standing dispute between Jonas Brothers fans and Justin Bieber fans.  Both groups of fans like to refer to “J.B.”, and tend to dispute the right.  On the Jonas Brothers vs. Justin Bieber inter-fan beef Justin calmly says, “Our fans seem to fight and I don’t know why. But I don’t care, you know? It’s whatever.”  Management reports that negotiations are underway to reach some compromise with the Jonas Brothers whereby they could agree to use different initials.  ”For example”, Brown says, “they could decide to just call themselves the ‘Jonas Guys’. Problem solved!”

What?! How could he do this? It’s his last name! It is what it is. Why would he go and change it just because people are making mistakes spelling it wrong? I honestly think this is an April Fools joke, because Justin Bieber wouldn’t just go out of his way to change his last name. That is the most rediculous thing i have ever heard. His last name is perfect for him. No letters deserve to be changed around. I love Justin Bieber too much to understand that he is respelling his last name. I will cry if he does change his name. I’m sure Justin doesn’t wanna see his fans cry, so his only solution is to keep it the way its spelled & forget about the people that can’t spell “Bieber”. Sound good?:)
